One of our Facebook Group members (we call them our groupies), Johnathan Bryson, has taken it upon himself to seek out which Gaston County restaurant contains the greatest cheesecakes.

The initial entry in his noble quest …

So today was the first day of the G.G.C.C. (officially known as The Great Gaston Cheesecake Challenge) and even though I totally just made that up the quest to find the best Cheesecake in Gaston County is incredibly real for me. Based on your recommendations I’ve identified my top five locations and today I started off on the west side of GC in Bessemer City at Dino’s Italian Pizzeria.

To start if you haven’t been to Bessemer City in a while then you owe it to yourself to take a ride through. The city’s been very intentional about developing their main street corridor and the result of their efforts along with those of the downtown merchants are very impressive. The overall result is a tranquil postcardish ambience that is definitive small-town America. Anchoring one end of this idyllic scene is Dino’s.

Of course the interior has a classic Mediterranean look to it but where the essence of the Mediterranean really comes through is in the food. Had a taste of both Italy and Greece with the spaghetti and world’s largest meatball and the gyro. Neither failed to please. In fact even the house salad and breadsticks were exceptional.

Johnathan Bryson
Cheesecake Quest-er-er

Where Dino’s leaves the Med behind and heads straight to Brooklyn is with the insanely ridiculous assortment of what should be illegal cheesecake ( yes my friends it’s that good)! Beware the caramel cheesecake because if you have a family history of addiction you should probably stay away. It most resembles a classic turtle cheesecake by composition but the execution is where they throw the rules out tha window.

It is pure blexcess (blissful excess) on every level- from the caramel to the chocolate to the walnuts to what I think was ganache hidden in the crust. Every part of this cake requires you to reevaluate your life’s purpose and the meaning of happiness. Further, it is MASSIVE ok? Like can’t finish it all with two people trying even if I had the munchies massive. Best of all the price point was very reasonable.

Thanks to all who nominated Dino’s because you didn’t let me down. It’s a real gem in Bessemer City’s crown. Heading east…next stop Webb’s Custom Kitchen!

Sister restaurant of The String Bean will offer Lake Wylie residents new dining option

Chad Hutcheson, owner of?The String Bean?in downtown Belmont, recently announced plans to open a new restaurant near Lake Wylie.? Seven Oaks Caf? will open this fall within the?McLean development?adjacent to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.

?Our team is thrilled with the idea of being a part of McLean and the opportunity to serve it and the great neighborhoods on both sides of the lake,? said Hutcheson.? Seven Oaks Caf?, which will serve breakfast and lunch in addition to take out and delivery services, will be situated on the ground floor of the historic John Davidson McLean house at 175 Armstrong Road, Belmont NC.

The historic Lake Wylie area homestead and surrounding land was known as ?Seven Oaks? for many years.? While the caf? will occupy the first floor of the house, the upstairs will continue to serve as an information center and administrative offices for the McLean community.

Seven Oaks Caf? will feature both indoor and outdoor seating, and dishes will include vegetables grown in the McLean community gardens.? Hutcheson, wife Katy and The String Bean general manager Nate Helton were first drawn to the location due to the overall character and setting of McLean.? Based upon the overwhelming popularity of The String Bean, the new Seven Oaks Caf? is sure to be a welcome addition to Lake Wylie.

Ranucci’s is out with their latest “news From the Pit” newsletter and it contains 2 BIG announcements.

The first big announcement is that they took First Place in Pork Shoulder at Smoke on the Mountain in Galax, VA on July 22nd.

ANNOUNCEMENT #2
We are proud to announce that Alex will be joining forces?with?Red Star Catering, a division of Mac?s Hospitality Group?in Charlotte as of August 1, 2017.

We have been looking to switch things up a bit and that is when Mac?s made the proposition to Alex to join their team. Yes we love what we do, Ranucci?s Big Butt BBQ is our pride and joy, and we are enjoying great success with the food truck and catering, but this is an awesome opportunity for Alex to grow?and to be challenged in a different way. Most people in our situation would be opening a restaurant, but we have already done that. So when Mac?s approached Alex with this ?too-good-to-turn-down? opportunity – we were all ears!

Alex has a fabulous relationship with the?Mac?s crew?and they have proven that they play well together after making such a great showing at the Memphis in May World Championship… 2nd Place is phenomenal! Joining the?Mac?s Hospitality team?will give Alex the flexibly to grow and expand his catering expertise ? while at the same time helping to grow and expand Red Star Catering. He will go from flying solo to being part of an established team, with varied expertise and knowledge.

We know you will have questions, so just ask away. The Food Truck will still be around but as?Red Star Catering,?we are working out the details on how all that will work.

Thank you all for your support over the past few years. As we embark on this new journey we hope you will all come along for the ride with us, keep in touch, and continue to keep Alex in mind for catering (via Red Star).

Remember, Alex joined the Mac’s Smoke Shop Team (from?Mac’s Speed Shop?- Charlotte) to compete at the?World Championship Barbecue Contest – Memphis in May?May 19-20th and they FINALED IN WHOLE HOG and went on to win SECOND PLACE!!! This is a HUGE deal – to just get on stage or top 10… but to be in the running for top 3 then taking 2nd is pretty remarkable!!

The food truck will still be around, but most likely as Red Star Catering, a division of Mac?s Hospitality Group. Stay tuned for more information.

The latest newsletter from The String Bean restaurant in Belmont, NC includes information on 2 upcoming Riedel Wine Glass Seminars!

Riedel Wine Glass Seminar – Does the “glassware” truly make a difference in the enjoyment of fine wine?

Our recent Riedel Wine Glass Seminar provided a great experience for all present! Because we had more RSVPs than we could accommodate for the first seminar, we’ve scheduled two more: one on Tuesday, July 18th, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. and one on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.

Even if you’ve owned and used Riedel glasses for years, as have I, if you’ve never attended a Riedel Seminar, it is an eye-opening and unique experience worth your time and effort! Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate, world renowned wine expert says: “The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make.

“Is it magic? Can the design and shape of a wine glass really enhance your experience when drinking fine wines? Yes! There is a big difference in glassware and how much better your wines smell, taste and feel in the correct glass. The glass is a tool – with the proper glass, wine can be elevated…with the wrong glass, wine can be negatively impacted. The Riedel family is the world leader in forward thinking beverage glassware in terms of both form and function.

Sip from some of the world’s highest quality, most elegant stemware and learn why Riedel is considered the Rolls Royce of stemware. A Riedel representative will demonstrate the relationship between the shape of the glass and its impact on the consumer’s wine experience. The seminar will also feature hand-crafted, artisanal wines. Come join us for an experience that will change your wine glass choice – and enhance your enjoyment of wine for a lifetime!

The cost is $45 per person which includes your own personal set of 4 Riedel wine glasses (retail value of $40+) and wines for tasting from each type/style of glassware.

Please RSVP with your name, credit card and cellphone information to The String Bean @ (704) 825-3636 and ask for “Pops.”
